Prior to law school, she worked on staff at openDemocracy, AJ+ (Al Jazeera), and Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. Shilpa has conducted freelance research with a range of clients including NGOs, law firms, and grassroots groups. Her reporting has been published in The Guardian, The Intercept, The Baffler, Slate, Mother Jones and other outlets, and she was a 2019 fellow with the International Women's Media Foundation.
